City University Qatar continued its CUQ Career Lab Series with an engaging Law Careers Workshop titled From Classroom to Courtroom
City University Qatar (CUQ), in partnership with Ulster University, continued its CUQ Career Lab Series with From Classroom to Courtroom—an engaging workshop dedicated to exploring careers in law. Held on 13th April 2025 at CUQ’s Lusail Campus, the session brought together students, parents, and aspiring legal professionals interested in discovering the diverse opportunities a law degree can offer.
Why Study Law?
The workshop was led by Dr Esther McGuinness, Head of the School of Law at Ulster University, who shared valuable insights into the value of legal education and what it takes to succeed in the field. From advocacy and justice to intellectual challenge and financial stability, students were introduced to the many reasons law remains a popular and impactful academic path.
Attendees explored how law touches every part of society and opens doors to a wide range of professions—including legal practice, public policy, business, and international relations.
A UK-Standard Programme in Qatar
Dr McGuinness gave an overview of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) offered at CUQ, which mirrors Ulster University’s UK curriculum and academic standards. The programme provides a solid grounding in core legal principles while offering optional modules in areas such as Criminology, Politics, and International Studies.
The session also highlighted CUQ’s practical and student-focused learning experience, which includes:
- Access to the Ulster Law Clinic for real-world legal casework
- Participation in student societies, mock trials, and podcast projects like UU Talks Law
- A blended learning approach combining lectures, seminars, group work, and independent study
Preparing Students for Real-World Success
Students benefit from a robust academic support system, including dedicated advisors, one-to-one mentoring, peer support, and small class sizes. The degree also integrates career planning, helping students align their studies with long-term goals.
Graduates of the programme are equipped to pursue roles as barristers, solicitors, legal executives, or enter fields such as journalism, politics, compliance, and corporate governance. Many also continue on to postgraduate degrees like LLMs or PhDs.
